GEODE Series

Borrowing from mineralogical terms, the Geode Series explore the juxtaposition between exterior and interior; between surmise and surprise. Understated platonic solids in the form of simple pieces of ‘stock’ material belie complex and freeform ‘interiors’ with only hints of this contrast appearing on the side surfaces in the form of oddly shaped ‘apertures’. What began as CNC milling exercises to test out toolpathing on various machines later evolved into a deeper explorations of joinery and nesting between complex parts. Traditional edge detailing using flanges or rabbets to close and hide the joint proved unsuitable for such geometry. Instead a volumetric approach (more akin to masonry construction) was employed - where difference between complex forms is reconciled through a series of cutting operations, providing near perfect alignment and fit.
